Textbook 2

Scripts, narration, voiceovers.

  1. Read Chapters 11 and 14.
  2. Using the tape you have already shot for the Shooting 2 assignment, write a script for a 2- to 3-minute video.
  3. Use a TWO-COLUMN format for your script. In the left column, describe the visuals we will see. In the right column, provide all the narration, SOT and nat SOT. Identify speakers (SOT) clearly, and indicate whether the audio is a voiceover (VO). Use a simple table in MS Word to make sure the visuals line up with the audio. (See example: MS Word doc, 33 KB.)

How will you know how long (in minutes and seconds) your script is? (1) The parts from your Shooting 2 video can be timed easily, including what people are saying. Use a stopwatch. (2) The narration should be read aloud, at the appropriate pace, with a stopwatch. (3) Do the math!

Your script must include the full text of any and all audio you intend to include, including the parts of the interview you will include. Do not abbreviate or use "..." -- write out completely all voiced words that we will hear in the final edited video. That is a script!!

NOTE: No video editing before scriptwriting!! Writing the script is an exercise to help you visualize and plan before the actual editing occurs.

Send the completed MS Word document to me as an e-mail attachment -- by the deadline.
