About This Course
Description
This is an intermediate reporting and production course in which students gather information using journalism practices, such as in-person interviews, and learn to use various technologies (including video) to produce journalism stories for online and other digital platforms. No prior experience with the tools is necessary.
Prerequisites
The prerequisite for this course is Journalists' Toolkit 1. Enrollment in a master’s degree program in the College of Journalism and Communications at the University of Florida is also required.
This course is NOT offered via distance education.
Objectives
Upon successful completion of this course, students will:
- Be able to shoot and edit video for use in journalism storytelling.
- Understand best practices for producing digital video for journalism Web sites.
- Understand basic principles of video compression and online delivery of video.
- Be able to work effectively as part of a team of journalists to produce a story.
- Be able to explain and critique current online video storytelling practices in journalism.
- Understand basic use of Adobe Flash in online journalism.
Attendance and Attitude
Students are expected to show respect for one another and for the instructor. Attendance and arriving on time for class are necessary. Lateness and absences will result in a lower final grade. If you have been absent, you are responsible for finding out about any missed material by going to the instructor’s office hours. These matters will not be handled via e-mail. There are no excused absences. There is no makeup work.
Deadlines
Late assignments are not accepted. Assignments are not accepted via e-mail unless requested by the instructor. If an illness or a personal emergency prevents you from completing an assignment on time, advance notice and written documentation are required.
Academic Dishonesty
Academic dishonesty of any kind is not tolerated in this course. It will be reported to Student Judicial Affairs, and it will result in a failing grade for the course. The university's Academic Honesty Guidelines provide additional details, which you are expected to understand completely.
